Winds Blow Dust off the Solar Panels Improving Energy Levels

Pasadena CA (JPL) Nov 20, 2017
Opportunity is continuing her winter exploration of Perseverance Valley on the west rim of the Noachian-aged Endeavour Crater. Although the depth of the winter solstice is still a week or more away, energy levels have improved for Opportunity. One contributor is the improvement in solar array dust factor as winds blow some of the dust off the arrays. That said, the rover did spend one sol, Sol 4906 (Nov. 11, 2017), as a recharge sol. On Sol 4903 (Nov. 8, 2017), Opportunity continued a multi- ... read more

Unlucky dinosaurs: Scientists say asteroid had 13 percent chance of triggering extinction
Washington (UPI) Nov 9, 2017
When an asteroid came barreling into Earth some 66 million years ago, it wasn't necessarily a guarantee that life on planet Earth would be drastically altered - that 75 percent of all plant and animal species, including the dinosaurs, would disappear. According to a new study published Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports, there was just a 13 percent chance such a collision would ... more

Pluto's hydrocarbon haze keeps dwarf planet colder than expected
Santa Cruz CA (SPX) Nov 16, 2017
The gas composition of a planet's atmosphere generally determines how much heat gets trapped in the atmosphere. Can a magnetic sail slow down an interstellar probe
Frankfurt, Germany (SPX) Nov 20, 2017
With a miniaturised space probe capable of being accelerated to a quarter of the speed of light, we could reach Alpha Centauri, our nearest star, in 20 to 50 years. Neutron star with strong magnetic field may still launch jets

An international team of astronomers led by the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands) suspects that neutron stars with a strong magnetic field can still launch so-called jets. Since the 1980s, it was thought that strong magnetic fields inhibit the formation of these plasma streams. But observations with more advanced telescopes indicate jet-like radiation.
