Who Wants to Go to Mars - One Way?

The maverick startup company, Mars One, has selected over 1,000 would be and hopeful emigrants who have applied for a one-way trip to Mars. The pool of applicants included over 200,000 people. Several questions immediately come to mind. Why would anyone voluntarily apply for a one-way trip to Mars, let alone to anyplace?
