Opportunity Motors South
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 04, 2009
Opportunity has been making good progress driving. After completing a survey of meteorites recently, Opportunity has turned south around the point of a large ripple field. Eventually, the rover will resume heading east towards Endeavour crater. The rover drove southward on sols 2043, 2045, 2047, 2048 and 2049 (Oct. 22, 25, 27, 28 and 29, 2009), totaling over 280 meters (918 feet). ... read more

A Mars Rover Named "Curiosity"
Huntsville AL (SPX) Nov 02, 2009
If you found your grandmother's diary, tattered and dust covered, up in the attic, would you read it? Of course you would. Granny was a pistol! Brush off the dust, open up the little book, and foray into her lively and interesting past. Dust cloaks some fascinating tales in other places, too. NASA scientists will soon brush the dust off some Martian rocks that are practically bursting ... more

    Amnesia-Like Behavior Returns On Spirit
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 02, 2009
Until Oct. 24, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover had gone more than six months without an episode of amnesia-like symptoms like those that appeared on four occasions earlier this year. In these amnesia events, Spirit fails to record data from the day's activities onto the type of computer memory - non-volatile "flash" memory - that can retain the data when the rover powers down for its energy ... more

    Channels From Hale Crater
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 29, 2009
This image from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows channels to the southeast of Hale crater on southern Mars. Taken by the orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera, this view covers an area about 3 kilometers (2 miles) wide. Channels associated with impact craters were once thought to be quite rare. Scientists proposed a variety of unusual circumstances to ... more

Martian Projects Shall Use Nuclear Energy
Moscow, Russia (XNA) Oct 28, 2009
The future Mars manned exploration projects will only become true by using nuclear energy, said President and Chief Designer of Russia's Energia Aerospace Corporation Vitaly Lopota here on Monday. Since current rocket technologies are not sufficient for the future exploration of Mars and the whole Solar system, and since no alternative energy resources have been found as of now, the only ... more

    Building An Astrobiology Tool Kit
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 21, 2009
How can we be sure that instruments that will be sent on future Martian missions will work properly? How do we know that they will obtain accurate and precise measurements? How will we be able to compare the data to what we have seen on our planet? The answer is easy: by testing, testing and again testing them during field trips on Earth. This has been one of the most important goals of ... more

Team Runs Operational Test To Prepare For Extracting Spirit
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 21, 2009
Engineers using test rovers on Earth to prepare for extracting the sand-trapped Spirit rover on Mars have added a new challenge to their preparations. Until last week, the engineers commanding and assessing drives by the test rovers were usually in the same room as the sandbox setup simulating Spirit's predicament, where they can watch how each test goes. That changed for the latest ... more

China Works For Mars And Moon Missions
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Oct 20, 2009
The launch of a Russian Phobos Grunt probe to Mars on October 16 has been delayed until 2011. The delay also affects China's first mission to Mars. The 240-pound Chinese Yinghou-1 spacecraft was to be mounted atop the Russian spacecraft for transport to the Martian orbit, where it was to be released before the Russian spacecraft landed on Phobos. The delay, however, gives us grounds to ... more
